Summary: "Going Places" as the title aptly suggests, it about the flight of imagination into a world of fantasy that teenagers often indulge in. It tells us about the fantasies nurtured by a young girl named Sophie who was on the verge of stepping out of school. She starts believing her fantasies as if they had actually happened in her life. She belongs to a lower middle class socioeconomic stratum of the society. She dream of opening a boutique or becoming a fashion designer which, though looks unlikely eta the stage, may have a chance of realization. But her claim of having met the star footballer Danny Casey and the entire conversation or his promise to meet her again are entirely based on her imagination and is not even remotely connected to reality. That is why she ends up being disappointed at having to face the reality of not meeting her dream idol.

Ans: Though Sophie and Jansie were class-mates, their attitudes towards life temperament were quite the opposite. Sophie was a dreamer and love to live in a world of fantasies. It was not that she worked extra hard to achieve that dream but thought they would come by her way. Her dreams were far removed from the life she lived. She Want to life of sophistication and glamour. jansie, on the other hand, was very practical and rooted. She reminded Sophie that they were destined to work in the biscuit factory and she should not nurture her fanciful thoughts. While one is a fantastic dreamer and lives in a world created by her, the other does not dream at all but accepts life as it is planned out for them.

Ans: our fast introduction is Sophie’s father is at all dinner table with a sarcastic comment at Sophie’ on her claim to come into money. He is a stockily built man with a plump face which is sweaty and grimy after the day’s work. The manner in which he sat down to watch television and tossed Derek’s shoes onto the sofa portrays him as a man who is not very refined or sophisticated. There is an aggressive manliness about him. He is an avoid football fan and go to watch the match every week. Later he would go to the pub to celebrate United’s win.

   Sophie’s father knew his daughter too well. When Geoff told him about the meeting with Danny Casey, he just looked at her disdainfully and warned her that she would get into lot of trouble if she kept talking this way. He never believed her “wild stories”.

Ans: Sophie liked Geoff more than any one person, basically, because of his nature. To her, he was an enigma. He was elder to her and spoke very little. There was area about his life which were completely unknown to her and about which her spoke nothing. She wanted to be closer to him and confide in him all her secrets. She wished her showed his affections for her and that someday, he would take her with him.

    To Sophie, Geoff symbolised her escape to the world of her fantasy. It was with him that she rode away to the world that has been waiting so long for her arrival. There was also a sound of applause as the world stood to greet them. His silent thought fascinated her simply because they were unknown to her and remained out of her reach.

Ans: Sophie’s belonged to a lower middle-class background. There are plenty of indications which drive us to conclude this. The conversation between the two girls indicates their financial background. Sophie’s dreams are unrealistic as Jansie says they have been earmarked for the biscuit factory which means they have to work right after school. When Sophie reaches home, we get a picture of where she lives. The description of the house and the activities, her brother’s apprenticeship as a mechanic, father’s sweaty face, and mother’s pile of work are indications of their socio-economic status.
