A Thing of Beauty
--John Keats
About the author: John Keats was born of somewhat humble parentage on October 31, 1795. He went to school at Enfiled and was remembered by his friend for his generosity, aggressiveness and a passion for reading. It 1811, Keats was apprenticed to become a surgeon, but the call for poesy was too strong to be resisted, and from 1817 onward, he lived a life of a man of letters. Keats now settled down to a literary life but his poetical works did not attract much attention. The hostile reviews on his long narrative poem "Endymion" deeply wounded the poet, and it the opinion of some critics, hastened his death.
Keats died of consumption in Rome on February 23, 1821, and was buried in the old Protestant cemetery near the pyramid of Caius Cestius. Young as he died, he was one of the most promising poets and left an indelible mark in English literature.
Summary of A thing of Beauty: The
poem "A thing of Beauty" is a revolt against commonplace reality and
talks about how beautiful things give us pleasure and alleviate suffering and
sorrow. According to Keats, an object of beauty differs from ordinary objects
of life. In absolute reverence to all things beautiful, Keats believes that
ordinary objects have a temporary appeal and the admiration is thus short
lived. Its loveliness decreases with the passage of time. Contrary to this, are
the objects of beauty with a permanent, long lasting appeal unaffected by time
or space. The charm or the fascination of such objects do not decrease or
diminish at any point of time. A thing of beauty is like a ray of hope and
light that consoles a man in misery and misfortune. Keats associates the
objects of beauty to a cluster of flowers and a group of shady trees where a
tired soul can just sit and relax.
Largely centered on Nature, Keats describes the
effects that beauty can have on a person, and when appreciated, it can make
one's spirits soar even in time of misery and gloom.
